A question, to Matt specifically, but anyone that can answer is welcome to.

I was thinking about that problem Josh has with his computer and, Matt, can you boot Windows from a CD-ROM or something, and run ScanDisk that way and see if maybe ScanDisk'll fix the problem? I know on a Mac I can repair a drive so long as I didn't boot from it. Because, like you said, you'd be hard pressed to find someone willing to install an ickified and possibly viral drive on a computer that is well. Just a thought.

I am not a geek. Josh is even less of a geek than I am, because he asks me for help. So, as a friend, I do what I can for Josh, because you help your friends. I turn to the only true geek among us: Matt. Matt is our own true geek.

Some versions of windows (I know 2000, xp) let you boot from the CD (this bootability depends on the CD drive. some have it, some don't) and do a restore of just the system files, potentially clearing the problem...

... or potentially screwing the machine up further.

What your buddy needs to do is back up his papers, files, images, music, etc and re-format the entire hard drive and reinstall everything. Yes, this is time consuming, but with Windows you sort of have to do that every few years.

I recommend installing Windows 2000. All other versions are buggy, bloated, or both.

Okay, I take Josh and Dennis out of the geek squad, and I'll add Pat to it!

Thanks for the input, fellas and Erin. The system is so mucked, that a back up is out of the question unless booting from the CD works, of course booting from the CD is dependent on Josh being able to find his Win2000 CD...

Wait, wasn't it Dennis who commented on a post that had gone off track a few weeks ago? And that post was WAY more in line with the theme of alleyparty.com than this one...It makes me sad to see it smushed between a poker night reminder and "Hot Night in the Alley." Shame on you boys!

Unless of course, you'd like to install some anti-virus software on my new laptop and create a firewall for me so I don't have to do any of this myself. In which case, you all rock and can continue the computer geek posts ad nauseum.
